DALE LAITINEN
SHAPE SHIFTING: MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE
Watercolor-Plus
Intermediate/Advanced

Any type of art making demands a practiced eye and hand. Experienced painters know that shape making is the key to imaginative design. Dale will inspire you to discover intriguing, practical ways to enlarge your way of “seeing” nature’s underlying design, enabling you to create realistic paintings that are eye catching and captivating.

In this workshop you will discover new ways to see your subject as shapes rather than objects and begin to train yourself to interpret these in transparent and opaque watermedia, as well as alternative materials. You will begin with preliminary sketches from photos, outdoor subjects and remembered imagery. Then, through instructional demos, timely PowerPoint programs, critiques, and individual instruction, Dale will help you discover new ways to paint the landscape through strong design, abstraction, and alterative materials.

He will introduce you to his big brush approach to color layering while painting on watercolor paper as well as Aquabord. Dale always permeates his teaching with the principles of line, shape, value and texture, helping you to understand and paint an insightful view of your subject. The supply list provided is a good starter, but you are encouraged bring any other materials you would like to use as well.

A native of northern Minnesota, Dale has lived, moved, and traveled across the American West and this figures prominently in his work. One of the signatures of a Laitinen painting is the long view with the natural forms of the topography being foremost. His works extend to the interaction between structures such as roads, dams, canals, powerhouses, and the natural landscape.

Dale has been painting for over forty years and is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West.  He is a graduate of San Jose State University with a BA in Art with a painting concentration. He is a past juror of many National and regional exhibitions. He has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor Magazine, and Drawingboard Magazine. His work has also been featured in several books including “The Splash Series, Painting with the White of your Paper”, and “The Transparent Watercolor Wheel”. He has written the book, “Blue Shadow Country” and has two DVDs available. An active workshop instructor, Dale has traveled widely in both the US and Abroad.
