Painting portraits can be a delightful challenge of layering, edgework, line and color with a seasoned, brilliant teacher. Jean suggests choosing subjects that draw you, such as people who have impacted you or exemplify diverse cultures and occupations. She will empower you to find a way to express the human face with spontaneity and character in a language that reflects what intrigues you.
Although Jean is well known for her mastery of watercolors, mixed media has become an important venue for her own creative expression, as well as a medium for teaching others. She has been painting for over twenty years while balancing her strong teaching abilities with writings in order to convey her innovative ideas to others.
Included in Canada’s Who’s Who, Jean is a signature member of AWS, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Federation of Canadian Artists, the Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists and the California Watercolor Association. She has received numerous awards, including the grand prize in the Painting on the Edge International Exhibition in Vancouver in 2005, and the AWS silver Medal of Honor in 2001. In 2005 Jean was the first recipient of the Federation of Canadian Artists Early Achievement Award, granted for her many honors, awards, and international writing to promote art education, as well as her consistent, exceptional painting.
Jean has exhibited her work Internationally in China, London England, Stockholm Sweden, New York (United Nations), San Francisco, Mexico and across Canada. She has recently completed a body of work for Public Exhibitions dealing with the changes that have occurred within the social fabric of Rural Canada.
She is a contributing editor for The Artist’s Magazine and her art has appeared in the Splash, Best of Watercolor Series, as well as Watercolor Magic, International Artist and Magazin’Art. She has a popular book called, “Expressive Portraits: Creative Methods for Painting People”.
