LIGHTEN UP/LOOSEN UP
Enhance your watercolor technique with an entertaining, educational master! You will experiment with the creative use of the ‘tools’ of watercolor, such as brush choice, manipulation, and color mixing, with a strong emphasis on the principles of design. Richard offers informative technical information sprinkled with humor and antidotes, entertaining and educational painting demonstrations and lots of one on one time as he helps you through your individual painting process. Richard has a true passion for watercolor and enjoys the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with students of all levels.
Your day will begin with a short presentation on the “topic of the day”, which has been determined by the level and interest of the class. It will be more like a conversation than a lecture. Richard encourages feedback and questions, as he believes we learn from each other, and everyone has something important to share. Richard will do at least one complete painting demonstration a day, explaining his decision-making process as it happens, emphasizing the WHY as much as the HOW. After the demonstration, the class will start on their own paintings. Richard will offer individual advice on design and technique based on the unique style and goals of each student.
Richard has enjoyed a successful 45-year career as a freelance commercial artist/graphic designer in the advertising/marketing industry and continues to be a sought-after juror and teacher around the country.
In 2005, Watercolor Magic Magazine named him as one of the top 10 emerging watercolorists in the country. He has been featured in many magazines such as Watercolor Magic, Splash 10, Splash 13, Watercolor Artist, The Art of Watercolor. Among his many awards, in 2014, Richard was awarded the Grand Prize Award in the Daniel-Smith Customer Art Competition.
“Design is what it is all about. Great technique will not make up for poor planning and design. I truly believe there are certain simple truths that once understood, will improve one’s painting immediately.”
