The 36th annual Kanuga Watermedia Workshops @ Montreat, March 27 - April 1, 2022 (4 day class instruction March 28–31), will be held at the Montreat Conference Center in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, 18 miles east of Asheville. The workshops offer the student a choice of eleven artist-instructors, independent study, or 'Paint With Friends – Open Studio’. Our instructors are chosen for their ability to help painters develop and advance their skills. Painting is always a learning experience. Our goal is to help painters sharpen their critical awareness and discover painting gratification. All levels of painters are invited. Instructors will conduct their individual classes in assigned classrooms. Each student works with one selected instructor the entire workshop. Classes are limited to 24 students, though most classes tend to be smaller. The instructor’s materials list, activity schedules, directions to the Montreat Conference Center, and other general information will be posted on our website. The Montreat Conference Center is located close to Asheville, N.C., and Interstates 26, and 40; and is served by the Asheville Airport. All workshop activities are held on the 4,000-acre campus. Housing Accommodations: Lodging is not included in the workshop rate. Accommodations can be made directly through the Montreat Conference Center, at a nearby hotel in Black Mountain, or at an Airbnb or VRBO on the Montreat property. On site accommodations include: The Assembly Inn: (SOLD OUT) The Assembly Inn has 100 guest rooms and accommodates groups of up to 200 guests in single and double occupancy rooms, as well as one apartment and one deluxe suite. All rooms have either one king bed, one queen bed, or two twin beds. While some guest rooms have private baths and others have connecting baths, all baths are tiled and equipped with tubs and showers. Standard guest rooms do not have TV’s, phones, refrigerators, or microwaves. William Black Lodge: (SOLD OUT) William Black Lodge is able to host 60+ guest in 29 guest rooms. All rooms have either one king bed, one queen bed, one double/full, or two twin beds. The public areas on the first floor are equipped with wireless Internet so those attending can stay connected to work and family. However, we do not offer Internet access or televisions in lodge rooms, a purposeful omission that encourages guests to enjoy the beauty of nature and the camaraderie of other people. The William Black Lodge is proud to be a smoke-free facility. NOTE: If you are interested in staying in a smaller lodge on the Montreat property and don't mind sharing a bath and/or bedroom with a painting buddy, there are some other options for you. Please contact Meghann directly. She will be handling the booking of a couple of the smaller lodges. (The room rates are per room and not per person so you will get the best rate by having a roommate. It's a great opportunity to get to know other artists outside the classroom!) Additional Lodging Options: Hotels in nearby Black Mountain: The Hampton Inn (only 3 miles/10 minutes from the conference center) has reserved a block of rooms for our event. The rate is $109 per room/night and includes a hot breakfast. Rooms also have a fridge and microwave. Other hotels in Black Mountain include: Quality Inn, Monte Vista Boutique Hotel, Super 8, and Acorn Motel. Consider checking rates on Priceline or another travel site to get the best rate. There are also several Airbnb and VRBO properties to check out. These options might be especially good for groups. The workshop rates include tuition, special evening programs and social hour. (Lodging and meals are not included in the workshop rate.) Painters’ Guests (non-workshop) are welcome for an additional fee. Many activities are available in the area and on the Conference grounds. Commuters are welcome. Social hour and evening programs are included. We encourage commuters to participate fully as the ideas and conversations that often occur during the social hour, at mealtimes, and during the evenings are a major part of the enrichment of the program. There’s more about being at Montreat than just what happens in the classroom! Meals: (CURRENTLY MONTREAT MEAL PACKAGES ARE SOLD OUT) A limited number of meal packages are available through the conference center.
